North American Bancard helps community blood supply

Summer is a time of fun, rest and relaxation. It can also be a time when blood supplies in our community are low. Vacations and school closings mean fewer donations, and highway and recreation accidents mean the demand for emergency blood supplies increases.

Memorial Day unofficially started the summer season. North American Bancard employees made it a point to help build the blood supply in Southeastern Michigan just before the holiday. On Thursday, May 21, employees from the company’s two Troy, Mich., locations volunteered to roll up their sleeves and donate blood. They also invited their neighbors, Kostal & Valeo, to participate in the drive. A total of 26 volunteers – including eight new donors – attempted to donate blood. A total of 23 units of blood were collected.

Every day, regardless of the season, hospital patients need blood products like red cells, platelets and plasma for ongoing and emergency medical care. The Red Cross considers a three-day supply of blood safe and adequate for meeting the needs of hospital patients, with five to seven days optimal for emergency preparedness.

You may be eligible to contribute to our community’s blood supply if you are at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and are in good general health,. To schedule an appointment to donate please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE (1-800-448-3543) or visit givelife.org for more information. All donors need to present positive identification.
